"...There ain't no dark 'til something shines" (Tones van Zandt)
When I first heard her perform at an open mic night in Helsinki a few years back, it was THAT voice that blew me away. Deep and dark, it is the antithesis of how a young woman in her early twenties should sound. It has those world-weary and resigned tones that make Billie Holiday and Leonard Cohen so appealing. It sounds like the truth.
(Jean Ramsay/ Rumba)
"Above a soft scrim of analog hiss, Wagner, 23, mixes glimpses of the apocalypse, splinters of heartbreak and blows of disappointment with a throaty, natural moan that nods to the late lords of the Delta. Her unhurried acoustic guitar pieces - a doomed waltz, a thorny blues, a knotty ode - summon John Fahey's boast, "I can make syncopation sound like death" - Village Voice
"Chilly murder ballads... with just guitar and a closely miked voice, it's aimed straight at those goths among us who can't take any more long, dark nights without a new Mazzy Star album" - MOJO ****
"She forces you to listen to what she's saying, and like recent folks stand-outs Laura Marling or Joanna Newsom, Wagner's work feels extremely personal and soul-bearing - it's like you're spying on her, alone in a room, spilling her guts out onto the chords" - MTV Hive
"There's no emotional bloodletting on her record, no chest-beating displays of raw feeling. Instead, you're left with the unsettling sound of a young woman expressing thoughts way bigger than her, almost as if she's acting as a conduit for some old Lovecraftian darkness. It's a heavy record, and it's one that lingers" - Stereogum
"Unpretentious, gloomy, clever, and compelling" - The Times (UK) ****
